Ramsay Mechanical Aptitude Test
The Ramsay Mechanical Aptitude Test or MAT is an exam which was first published by Ramsay Corporation in 2004. The latest version of this exam is the MAT-4. The exam aims to provide a short assessment of the examinee's mechanical abilities, without taking into account his\her social and cultural background. Alongside the Bennett Mechanical Comprehension Test and the Wiesen Test of Mechanical Aptitude, Ramsay is one of the leading publishers of mechanical aptitude tests.
Which Skills Are Evaluated?
The MAT-4 evaluates candidates according to:
- Mechanical reasoning skills, in accordance with the job market's current demands.
- Ability to learn about and perform maintenance tasks.
- Ability to manage and oversee industrial production.
- Understanding and application of mechanical basics required for the profession.

The MAT-4 Format
The Ramsay Mechanical Skills and Aptitude Assessment is comprised of 36 multiple-choice questions, to be answered in up to 20 minutes. The purpose of this test is to assess the candidates' learning potential rather than any previous knowledge of mechanics, which is assessed in a different Ramsay test named the Mechanical Entry.
Unlike BMCT-II, this exam lays the focus on day-to-day topics such as household items and tools as well as academic aspects in physics and science in general. There are also exercises that focus on production and maintenance.
For Which Occupations Is the Ramsay Mechanical Aptitude Test Intended?
Occupations which may require candidates to take the Ramsay Mechanical Ability Test include:
- Maintenance/Installation: Industrial maintenance technicians
- Industrial machinery: toolmakers and tool adjusters, machine operators
- General industrial manpower: workers, handlers
- Production management: production technicians, tool setters
- Mechanics: Millwrights
The MAT-4's Level of Difficulty
As mentioned above, the Ramsay Mechanical test does not assess the candidate's current knowledge of mechanics but rather his\her future learning potential. The questions included in the Ramsay test will therefore be less precise than those in the BMTC-II and will focus on everyday objects.
For instance, there could be a question in which the candidate is asked to pick the type of hammer suitable for specific tasks such as removing a nail (alongside illustrations of different types of hammers). Another example is a question regarding a truck's direction of acceleration, also based on a simple illustration included as part of the question.
How Are the Test Results Presented?
Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to find examples of the Ramsay's MAT-4 exam results. If you have taken this test and would be willing to share the test report, we (and other candidates) would be extremely grateful.
In Which Languages Is the MAT-4 Available?
The Ramsay Mechanical Aptitude Test is available online as well as in hard copy in English and Spanish. Please note that the previous version of the test, MAT-3, was also available in French, however the MAT-4 has not yet been translated into French.
